I just rolled a very handsome male qunari with the intention of romancing Cassandra The struggle is super real. Ah I’m in the same predicament. I made a m! My female inquisitor ended up with Cullen, and frankly I was kind of underwhelmed. My apologies to the universe. Though I have to admit, I find Cullen endearing – especially once he’s mastered not using Lyrium anymore. I was underwhelmed by Dorian’s romance love the character, though!

Why couldn’t I romance anybody in this game?

February I have played and loved Dragon Age for a long time. This is the first time I have ever found myself disinterested in the romance aspect of the game and the connection between the serious lack of options. Cassandra im sorry its no Morrigan or Isabella or even Merell. And Josephine is not a good secondary choice.

I mean their are plenty of could be options with Liliana if she did not stay with the hero of Fereldan or Morrigan.

The best designed and most popular video games have historically been categorized as first-person shooters with male only protagonists, but now mainstream video game developers, like Bethesda, Bioware, EA and Ubisoft, are looking to include a more diverse audience. LGBTQ gaming has never been better, so get ready to dive in and become the sassy space queen or medieval monarch you were always meant to be!

Are you into fiery dragons, elven magic, or medieval queers donning duel-wielding daggers? If your answer is yes, yes and yes, buckle up your Birkenstocks and download this game as soon as you can. Dragon Age Inquisition hooked me like no other video game has done before. The plot: A continuation of the previous games in the Dragon Age series, Inquisition begins with a bang—literally.

A massive explosion creates a tear in the veil, the magical boundary between the physical and spiritual world. Enter lots of spirits and demons! A world of chaos and panic! You are the sole survivor of the blast, and emerge with a power that can aid in the effort to seal the veil. The character creation: The character creation process mirrors the common RPG Role Player Game, for the newbies out there practice of picking a race, class, and gender limited to male or female so far, unfortunately.

Different combinations of races and classes award unique advantages in the game, so a lot depends on the way you as the Inquisitor want to play. The endless character customization is just one of the many reasons Inquisition is my personal favorite — you get to customize your quests and queerness while you play.

Please take into consideration the quotation marks around best, as it is entirely subjective, and it depends on what you are saying it is the “best” of. A few years ago before I ever played a BioWare game I was told by a friend that their games contain a selection of romance options, said friend compared it to dating simulators. I thought it sounded shallow, and scorned the very idea.

Although I ridiculed the idea of romance options I decided to explore them. I was curious about their appeal, and thought that I might as well commit to it since it was an option in the game that the developers had apparently put effort into. I’m sure it’s obvious by the title that I did grow interested in the romance options. The characters were so fully fleshed out and well written that I felt the need to know as much about them as possible. In every game thus far I have played through every romance at least once and I feel as if I understand each romance optional character better for it.

Waiting for Katoh: Romancing the Iron Bull in Dragon Age

Dragon Age: Inquisition , the third main video game in BioWare ‘s Dragon Age series, is the most successful video game launch in BioWare history based on units sold. The organization’s primary purpose is to restore order to the continent of Thedas, the setting of Inquisition , where civil unrest and civil wars have plunged entire nations and societies across the known world into chaos. A supernatural calamity in the beginning of Inquisition led to the deaths of the Divine and the majority of the Chantry leadership, and the subsequent opening of a mysterious metaphysical tear in the sky called the “Breach”, which is unleashing dangerous demons upon the world of Thedas.

The setting of Inquisition is a world that has been described as a dark fantasy setting, and events primarily occur within the Theodosian nations of Ferelden and Orlais; a significant focus of the narrative is character-driven, and revolves around how its characters deal with the weight of cataclysmic destruction and carry on through hardship.

Some news: I must sadly announce that, after 17 years, today is my last day at BioWare. I’ll miss my team, and wish everyone here the best. The surprising announcement didn’t come with any additional details, so it’s not clear what Gaider’s next move will be. For now, it’s worth taking a moment to consider the impact Gaider’s had as a key creative force at a major game studio who also happens to be openly gay — and a vocal force for more inclusiveness in games.

The work speaks for itself. He’s written some of gaming’s most memorable characters, such as HK, the “meatbag”-despising assassin droid from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , and Cassandra, a holy warrior and powerful female figure from the Dragon Age games. Gaider also wrote Dorian Pavus from Dragon Age: Inquisition , which he said was the first “fully gay” character he’d created. Dorian’s complex, heartbreaking backstory involves an intolerant father who tried to “correct” his son’s homosexuality using a forbidden form of magic.

BioWare is known for its enormous, story-heavy role-playing games. In addition to facing grave, world-threatening obstacles, players also contend with interpersonal relationships that, in many cases, lead to romance. Gaider spoke to IGN ahead of Inquisition ‘s launch in about how tricky inclusion can be in an industry where the “default,” as he puts it, is for characters to be straight, white and male. Gaider’s first BioWare project and first game was Baldur’s Gate 2 , in , which didn’t feature any same-sex relationships.

When I sat down to play Pokemon Crystal for the first time at nine years old, I got an unexpected surprise: Are you a boy or a girl? I stared at the screen. No one had ever asked me that question before, let alone a video game. As a gamer girl, I had never seen myself in games, so the opportunity to actually play as a female protagonist was a huge deal.

Although lots of games still forced me to play as a male character, I eventually got to play progressive games that gave me the choice to play as female, too. It was exciting to see myself represented in the games that I loved. When I came out as transgender at the age of 18, that feeling of belonging seemingly evaporated overnight. Games used to make me feel like I could conquer all enemies and become the Hero, but instead, I began to see myself represented in negative ways.

There is even less data available for trans representation in video games, although in my experience, the GLAAD research is in line with my experiences. My love for video games never faltered and I continued to enjoy playing as female characters, but I felt an incredible sadness that there were no longer people like me in the universes that I spent so much of my life in. Finding positive representation, or, in fact any representation of transmasculine characters always felt like like searching for a needle in a haystack, so I flocked to these games with wild anticipation.

For the first time, not only was I able to experience positive transmasculine characters, but I could interact with them, fall in love with them, and, most importantly, play as them in the case of Dream Daddy. But as a transmasculine person, would they ever live up to my expectations?

Some spoilers within. The complexities of the plot; the branching story lines; the moral dilemmas; the constant juggle of companion priorities; the combat; the explore content. I realised recently that my approach to Mass Effect and Dragon Age romances is very similar to how I go about it in real life: I have some pre-conceived notions of who I might like to do kisses with, and I sort of tailor myself my character, my lifestyle to enable that.

But then I flirt wildly with absolutely everyone, and fall head over heels in love with the first person who takes the bait.

However, unlike Dragon Age 2 where you could get several of your romanceable companions into a big polyamory, the romantic options of the.

David Gaider is a well-known videogame writer and designer who worked at BioWare for seventeen years before leaving to become the creative director of Beamdog in February The Dragon Age series is one of the most talked about in terms of queer representation in games. In Dragon Age 2, queerness was made more prevalent than it was in Dragon Age Origins, but it still heavily relies on bisexuality; this is something Gaider said he was uncertain about, as it felt like a decision of convenience rather than a deliberate choice.

He originally aimed for an even split of two gay romance options, two lesbians, and two bisexual characters – although he paused to clarify that, although Josephine is bisexual, Iron Bull ended up being pansexual. One of the most-loved queer characters in Dragon Age Inquisition is Dorian, who Gaider said was the most personal part of himself that he has ever put into a game. Gaider emphasised here that when discussing the importance of representation in games, using the statistics around the number of individuals who appreciate the content is better than relying on the percentage of people who use or access the content; more people appreciate that there is an option than those who actually use that option.

But queer folks seeking representation are an underserved market, Gaider said; he is excited to see that indie and double-A developers are starting to notice this, and are incorporating more queer content to fill this gap. He said that he would love to talk at events about more than just diversity, as he also loves speaking about writing and narrative design – and was pleased to have the opportunity to give a talk on worldbuilding at Game Connect Asia in the days before PAX.

Despite no longer working at BioWare, Gaider obviously still has a lot of positive feelings towards his time there and the team he worked with. He was proud of each of them for standing by the individuals on the team who were attacked by movements like GamerGate for their outspoken opinions in favour of diverse representation. At first, they were all confused by this number – as they had a large number of women in significant roles – but soon they realised it was due to every writer unnecessarily making a majority of their supporting characters men.

There are many reasons, Gaider feels, that triple-A developers currently avoid adding diverse representation, including queerness, into their games.

In Dragon Age: Inquisition , the Inquisitor of either gender and any race can pursue a romance. Unlike in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II , where it was possible to romance only the companions , Inquisition offers romantic interests for companions as well as non-companions, namely advisors. The Inquisitor can flirt with any romanceable and sometimes non-romanceable character they wish. A single flirt choice in dialogue does not lock the Inquisitor into a romance unless specifically prompted, so any and all available characters may be flirted with throughout the game, if desired.

Blackwall is the exception as flirting with him after moving to Skyhold softlocks his romance.

Great moments in PC gaming are bite-sized celebrations of some of our favorite gaming memories. If you choose the Human Noble start in Dragon Age: Origins, your journey through Ferelden begins in blood and tragedy as your family, the powerful house of Cousland, are murdered by Howe in a plot to seize your lands and titles. As the youngest child of the clan, you watch your mother and father cut down before you flee the castle to avoid this butchery, in the care of the Warden Duncan.

An epic quest ensues that puts larger matters like the fate of the world on your plate. But Howe’s sneering visage was never far from my mind throughout all of it. I knew in my heart that if I had anything to do with it, he would not see another dawn and my family would be avenged. Everything else, including the Blight and the Archdemon bearing down on the capital, seemed fading and distant matters in comparison to this long-awaited reckoning.

Arl Howe and his men tried their best to foil the rescue, but my blade struck true and my friends had my back as we fought room to room to reach the sick plotter’s torture chamber far below the Denerim streets. He scowled, cawed about his own superiority, and spit bile at me and my family to the very last moment. But sooner or later, steel met steel and I had no doubt how it would end.

And Sera is just a dating of crazy and I honestly never understood what she was trying to do. She seems the meeting of dating that just wants to fuck with people while trying to help the little people. Simply put, players agree with Solas more than Sera. And most people hate it when companions disagree with them, especially in a vocal way. Same trespasser why Vivienne and most of the DA2 companions are hated. This also means the companions who agree with them get along with the recruit swimmingly, giving little reason to hate them as well.

The ones who don’t Adding more reason for said hatred. I’ll also note that most the people who love Sera tend to agree with her and despise Solas again, personality recruit over differing, strongly held Tarot. I don’t think it’s quite that simple.

This piece was first published on November 1, Solas is one of the best-written characters in video games. He is a such a great character that I want to strangle that dude with my bare hands. Voiced by Gareth David-Lloyd, you might be fooled into thinking that Solas is not only worth listening to, but is a good person. You would be wrong. I only started to dislike Solas once I realized that he was always kind of putting me down. He was smug, and passive aggressive. My hatred of this character is the deepest compliment I can think to give the developers of Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Solas is so effective because his worldview, where pursuit of knowledge is paramount and those who disagree are worthy of scorn, is fully developed. Every time Solas snarked at me or a party member about how the Qun is stupid and the Grey Wardens are ineffective, I rolled my eyes because of course he would.
